Passado Simples
1) para algo terminado no passado.
Exemplo:
I read a book. (You finished reading the book)
Eu li um livro. (Você terminou leitura do livro)
2) para algo que é o interesse principal.
Exemplo:
I lived in Rome from 1999-2000.
Eu morei em Roma de 1999-2000.
3) para ação completada.
Exemplo:
John came to my house.
John veio para minha casa.
Passado Contínuo
1) para algo no passado que pode ou não ser terminado.
Exemplo:
I was reading a book last night.
(It is not certain if you finished the book.)
Eu estava lendo um livro ontem à noite.
(Não é certo se você terminou o livro.)
2) para algo que não era o interesse principal.
Exemplo:
I was living in Rome from 1999 - 2000, but I didn't see the Pope
(The Pope is not important here.)
Eu estava morando em Roma de 1999 - 2000, mas eu não vi o Papa
(O Papa não é importante aqui.)
3) para uma ação que está suspensa.
Exemplo:
I was watching TV, when John arrived at home.
Eu estava assistindo a TELEVISÃO, quando o John chegou a casa.
While I was watching TV John arrived at home.
Enquanto eu estava assistindo TELEVISÃO John chegou a casa.
4) para ações que estavam acontecendo ao mesmo tempo, onde o orador está focalizando nas ações e não em quando eles aconteceram.
Exemplo:
While you were cooking dinner, I was playing tennis.
Enquanto você estava cozinhando o jantar, eu estava jogando tênis.
